About Dún Laoghaire / Dublin

Dún Laoghaire is located in County Dublin in the Province of Leinster,. Dublin City is the capital and largest city in The Republic of Ireland. Dublin is located at the confluence of the River Liffey and Dublin Bay, an inlet of the Irish Sea. The city is naturally divided north and south by the River Liffey. Although Dublin is the largest City in Ireland it is rather small and compact. Central Dublin and environs are easy to explore by foot. In addition to being the capital and largest city in Ireland Dublin is the cultural and business center of Ireland.
Dublin in Irish is Dubh-linn which translates as “Black Pool” in English. Dublin City origins date back over a thousand years as a Viking trading post. Its current official Irish name is Baile Atha Cliath, meaning Town of the Ford of the Hurdles. During the 13th to 16th centuries the territory around Dublin under English governance was called the “Pale”. Thus, traveling beyond this area or referring to an outside area in Ireland was often called “beyond the Pale” a phrase that is still used to this day to imply something or someone is “beyond limits” or “out of bounds”.
