About Athlone
Clonmacniose located in County Offaly just south of Athlone along the banks of the River Shannon. Clonmacnoise was founded in 545 by Saint Ciarán and was once the site of one of Ireland’s largest monastic settlements. Today it is a fascinating ruin serving as testimony of Ireland rich Christian past.
Birr Castle is located in town of Birr in County Offlay. The Castle remains intact and is and is home to It is home of the seventh Earl of Rosse. The personally inhabitated living quarters are not opend to the public. However, the grounds and gardens are open to the public. The site is also home to Ireland's Historic Science Centre, a museum honoring Ireland's best scientists and their contributions to astronomy and botany. The key point of interest is of the Science Centre is the "Great Telescope” (aka The Rosse Telescope). This astronomical telescope was built for the third Earl of Rosse, and was completed in 1845. and was the largest telescope in the world until 1917. The telescope was refurbished in the 1990’s and is open to the public.
