 Cycling in Ireland

Cycling in Ireland can be a true adventure. It can also be a leisurely way to enjoy the beauty and people of the country. Ireland is an ideal setting for cycling and is one of the most popular sports in the country. Whether you are an experienced cyclist or a beginner, there is something for everyone. Tours are available for a round trip, or a one-way journey. You can bring your own cycle and equipment or rent it in Ireland. A scheduled tour or independent cycling can be arranged.

There are numerous miles of roads to explore. Most cycle tours will keep you on the back roads to enjoy the spectacular scenery and avoid the heavy road traffic. Routes vary from flat to undulating. Although there are hills and valleys to pump on, Ireland is less mountainous than other European countries. But have no fear, depending on your level of expertise, you can always be challenged. You will cycle around lush farmlands and magnificent coastlines, through forest tracks and rough lanes.

A variety of tours are available. You can cycle with a group, accompanied by a guide. Or you can cycle at a more leisurely pace on a self-led tour. Weekend breaks tours are also available. If you chose to be an independent cyclist, there are several companies that rent bikes. Bike rental agencies can provide suggested itineraries and arrange transport for luggage.

Cycle tours often spans eight days, and include accommodations, breakfast, bicycle hire, pannier bag, guide, luggage transfer, back-up vehicle, maps and tour insurance. Prices vary and are usually based on two people sharing accommodations. You may have an adventure of a lifetime enjoying the beautiful sites of Ireland and locals along your way.

For more leisure and recreational cyclists, a variety of 'Challenges' are offered throughout the year around the island. These challenges may range in distance from 25 km to 600km taking place within one or two days. Usually they are organized to raise funds for charity.
