CASTLE STAYS

When traveling in Ireland, one of the loveliest experiences you will have is staying in a Castle. Many castles have been refurbished with all of the modern comforts yet maintaining the allure and atmosphere of the history of their particular castle. Many of the original castles from the 12th and 13th century are now ruins and national monuments. However other structures have been built over or around the original structure, which in many cases are still several hundred years old.

One of the most important components of your castle stay will be the Epicurean delight of the well-trained chefs and cooks and their culinary creativity. Most castles have their own gardens where vegetables, fruits and herbs are grown, their menus range from good country cooking to fine dining. A Castle Stay is a most charming way to be pampered and cared for, for a night, a weekend, or a week; there are also some for sale.

COUNTY ANTRIM

BALLYGALLY CASTLE HOTEL is located on the Coast Road, Ballygally and 20 miles from Belfast. The hotel dates back to 1625. The original beamed ceilings and antique furniture take you back to an earlier time in history, it does offer all of the modern conveniences of today. There are 44 charming rooms. The excellent Restaurant overlooks the castle grounds and offers a table d'hote menu for dinner and a set menu for lunch along with an informal lunch menu in the lounge. It is an ideal base for touring 'The Glens of Antrim', Giant's Causeway. There are championship golf courses and sea fishing nearby.

COUNTY CAVAN

CABRA CASTLE is located just outside Kingscourt Town, less than an hour and a half drive from Belfast and Dublin. The original castle, the ruins of which still stand on high ground above the Wishing Well, close to Cromwell's Bridge, was to the west of the Kingscourt, Carrickmacross Road. Cabra Castle, once known as Cornery Castle, has a most interesting history with a variety of owners. The property was again purchased in 1991. It was renovated, converting the courtyard area into modern bedrooms, but with an authentic atmosphere. The property is set on 100 acres of gardens and parkland, now a National Park, overlooking the Cavan countryside. The 66 bedrooms are individually decorated, ensuite, with TV and direct dial telephone and offer all modern conveniences. There are unique antiques and paintings throughout the property. There is an excellent restaurant, the cuisine prepared from the best of local produce. The Castle supports its own 9-hole golf course. Activities nearby include fishing and horse riding. Close by are Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth.

ROSS CASTLE ACCOMMODATION -BOTH BED & BREAKFAST and SELF-CATERING  is located in Mount Nugent, County Cavan. You enter this 16th century Castle through a gateway to an inner courtyard, surrounded by a stone wall and trees. From the Castle you have a splendid view of Lough Sheelin, a 4500-acre lake famous for it's brown trout and well-stocked perch and large pike. When first built in 1533 this estate was known as Castle of the Ross. The Tower and Great Hall were completed a few years later. On the ground floor is a large entrance hall connecting the tower and sitting room, which has an open fireplace and French windows and views the lake. There is 1 double bedroom ensuite with private access to the terrace; there are 2 additional double bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Up the winding staircase in the tower are two double ensuite bedrooms, a spacious sitting room with a large fireplace and marvelous views of the lake The Castle is furnished with antiques. Activities include access to the neighboring Ross House, which offer fishing, boating, horse riding, tennis and shooting. The Equestrian Centre at Ross House can accommodate all horse interests. There are beautiful wooded areas around the Castle for walking and a path down to the lake. There are several boats for hire to fish or just enjoy the lake. Other attractions nearby are Tullynally Castle, 10 miles, woodland and walled gardens. Fore Abbey, church and Town Gates, 10 miles, an early Christian monastery. Loughcrew, 11 miles, Megalithic Cairns around the hills at Loughcrew. Newgrange is 70 miles. Ross Castle Accommodation is available for weekly Self-Catering holidays or a single night Bed & Breakfast. The Castle can accommodate up to 10 people for the Self-Catering with 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. Central heating, bed linens and towels are provided in rental price.

COUNTY CLARE

BALLYHANNON CASTLE - SELF-CATERING ACCOMMODATION is located in Co. Clare, 10 miles from Shannon Airport, 8 miles from Ennis, and 3 miles from Quin. Once through its medieval arch, it is remarkable how you will instantly be back in the 15th century, when this superb castle was built! The castle retains its medieval atmosphere and you will feel like you are in another time in history. Winding around a spiral stone staircase, each floor has rooms with the original exposed stone walls and arches.  Fully decorated with antiques, its medieval accommodation includes a dining room displaying battle armour; a fully equipped kitchen with modern conveniences discreetly hidden  (with open gas fireplace, microwave, washer/tumble-dryer, dishwasher, high speed internet connection, phone etc), The impressive sitting room with its minstrel's gallery and inglenook fireplace overlooks the picturesque Shannon Estuary and surrounding farmland;  3 double bedrooms, each with antique  4-poster beds, 1 twin bedroom with cushioned window alcove; 2 bathrooms, each with bath and handshower. There is a TV, VCR, CD player, telephone, hi-speed ISDN internet connection and electric underfloor heating. Linen and towels are changed twice weekly.  Catering is available at specific request (additional cost, advance notice is required).  Activities in the area include golf, horse-riding, scuba-diving, surfing, walking, hunting/shooting in season and easy access to the west of Ireland for sightseeing to places such as the Aran Islands, Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Galway, Limerick and Shannon International Airport.  Seven / three / two night bookings welcome and accommodates up to 8 people.

DROMOLAND CASTLE is located in Newmarket-on-Fergus, 15 minutes from Shannon Airport. The Castle dates back to the 16th century and is the ancestral home of the O'Brien's, Barons of Inchiquin, who are direct descendants of Brian Boru, the last High King of Ireland. Dromoland Castle is one of the most famous baronial castles in Ireland. It offers 75 luxurious guestrooms b, individually appointed with all modern comforts. History is weaved throughout this property in the wood and stone carvings, paneling, original oil paintings, romantic gardens and grounds. Dining is superb. Activities on the estate include an 18-hole golf course, fishing, boating and tennis, walking and cycling. Deep-sea fishing is available nearby.

GREGANS CASTLE HOTEL is located in Ballyvaughan, in the Burren in Co. Clare. Shannon Airport is a one-hour drive. The privately owned original Cregans Castle was a Tower House built in the 15th century and is across the road from the hotel. The current owners have had the property since 1976. There has been much restoration and upgrading of the property. This property is an 18th century Victorian Country House at the foot of the Corkscrew Hill with majestic views of the bare limestone mountains of the Burren, Galway Bay and surrounded by gardens. All the suites and bedrooms are individually decorated with Georgian and Victorian antiques, with different views of the local scenery. The food, a French cuisine, is prepared with special emphasis on local produce. There are 18 ensuite bedrooms and 4 suites. Activities include golf nearby, hiking, fishing, cycling, and croquet. The property is closed November through March.

COUNTY CORK

BALLYHOOLY CASTLE - SELF-CATERING is located near Mallow, Co. Cork. Shannon Airport is 90 minutes. This is a 1920's fishing lodge built onto the side of a medieval castle, overlooking the Blackwater River near Mallow. Although this Castle has been well maintained, it has not been upgraded, although very comfortable. This Self-Catering property can accommodate up to 8 people with 3 double bedrooms, 2 single bedrooms, and 4 bathrooms. There is a Dining room, drawing room, sitting room and kitchen. The house is staffed with a cook/housekeeper and a cleaner. The Lakes of Killarney are a one-hour drive. There are a variety of activities within the immediate area such as golf, horse riding and fishing, walking and cycling.

KILBRITTAIN CASTLE, BED & BREAKFAST and SELF-CATERING is located near Bandon, West Cork. Mahon, King of Rathleann, grandson of Brian Boru, originally built it in 1035. Descendants of Brian Boru still own and live at the Castle. This is a Bed & Breakfast accommodation or it can be rented as a Self-Catering. The Castle has been refurbished maintaining the enchantment of the castle yet with modern comforts. Each bedroom has been individually decorated. You walk up the stairs to the living quarters of the Castle. The stairs were made uneven to discourage the invaders. For one or two nights, Bed & Breakfast is offered. For a Self-Catering stay, the castle can accommodate up to 12 people with 6 ensuite bedrooms. Kilbrittain Castle is close to six golf courses, Kinsale - the gourmet capital of Ireland, with many restaurants and music pubs to choose from. There is fishing, hiking and horse riding nearby.

MALLOW CASTLE - SELF-CATERING is located in Mallow, Co. Cork. Shannon Airport is 20 miles, Dublin is 153 miles. This Castle has been occupied since 1687 and overlooks the 'Old Castle' ruins. The 'Old Castle' is a National Historic monument built in 1593. Mallow Castle is set on a twenty acre white deer park. It borders the banks of the Blackwater River and provides two miles of private salmon fishing. The elm-paneled drawing room has an open fireplace; antiques and art are displayed throughout the Castle. The dining room can comfortably seat 14 people, in the music room there is a Bechstein grand piano, and a Billiards Room is available for you pleasure. This Self-Catering property can accommodate fourteen people in the main Castle bedrooms plus ten people in the wing. It has seven large, ensuite bedrooms with sitting rooms; there are 5 double bedrooms, 2 twin bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. Another wing on the property has 3 double bedrooms, 2 twin bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. There is central heating throughout and a Morning room with a TV; heating and electricity are included in rental price. There is a full-time resident staff on board and the cook provides excellent meals utilizing the fresh produce from the garden. The property is accessible to any traveler who can handle interior stairs. Activities include several championship golf courses nearby, a short drive will take you to Blarney Castle, the Lakes of Killarney, Bunratty Folk Park, Rock of Cashel, visits in Cork City and Kinsale.

CASTLE HOTEL MACROOM is located in Macroom, Co. Cork, 24 miles west of Cork City. This is an ideal location for touring the South West of Ireland. The Restaurant has an award winning cuisine set elegant and friendly surroundings, utilizing local fresh produce. The Castle Hotel facilities include a fully equipped gymnasium, steam room, swimming pool. There is a local 18-hole Parkland golf course nearby. 

COUNTY DOWN, NORTHERN IRELAND

KILLYLEAGH CASTLE TOWER APARTMENTS - SELF-CATERING is located in Killyleagh, Co. Down, on the shores of Strangford Loch. Killyleagh Castle is 2 miles southeast of Belfast. Three luxury Self-Catering apartments have been developed in the Towers of this 12th century Norman Castle. The village of Killyleagh grew up around a fortified tower, built in the 12th century by the Norman knight, John DeCourcy. Most recent additions made in the last century, have created a fairytale, gothic façade, resembling a French Loire valley chateau. Killyleagh Castle is not open to the public, except for groups by arrangement only. Other facilities include gardens, courtyard, terrace, balcony, swimming pool, barbecue, and secure parking. A tennis court and private swimming pool are available in the Castle Gardens. Animals and pets are permitted. The 17th Century Tower Apartment - sleeps 4 people with a fully modern, 2-bedroom luxury apartment. There is 1 double and 1 twin bedded rooms, bathroom, living room with TV and dining room, a kitchen with refrigerator, washing machine, dryer and oven. Electricity is in addition to rental cost. The 19th Century Tower Apartment - sleeps 5 people with having 2 twin and 1 single bedded rooms. There is a living room with TV, dining room with seating for seven, kitchen with refrigerator, washing machine, dryer, and oven and a bathroom. Electricity is in addition to rental cost. Neither apartment is suitable to elderly or infirm persons.

COUNTY DUBLIN

CASTLEKNOCK CASTLE - SELF-CATERING is located 8 miles West of Dublin. Set on 560 acres, this 15th century castle offers a premium accommodation. The Castle is luxuriously furnished with 18th century antiques. This Self-Catering Property can accommodate up to 28 people with 11 bedrooms, ten are ensuite The Castle maintains staff to service the guest. The Chef prepares the freshest Irish cuisine, catering to international tastes. The staff can arrange other personal services as required. One-week minimum stay is required, cleaning and utilities are additional.

CLONTARF CASTLE HOTEL is located in Clontarf, a suburb of Dublin, two miles from City Centre and five miles from Dublin Airport. This Castle was originally built in the 12th century then given to one of Cromwell's servants and held by that family for 300 years. The Castle has been refurbished into a deluxe accommodation with 111 ensuite bedrooms. The bedrooms offer voice mail, ISDN facilities available upon request and there are a variety of conferencing and banqueting facilities available. There is a fully equipped gymnasium outside and free car parking. There are a choice of restaurants and bars within the property offering an international cuisine.

LUTTRELLSTOWN CASTLE - SELF-CATERING is located in Clonsilla, Co. Dublin on 560 acres of beautiful parkland and overlooking the Dublin Mountains. The 15th century Gothic castle, originally of Norman origin, has been fully restored and furnished with a unique collection of 18th century Irish furniture. Coots and swans swim in the lake and a herd of prize Limousin cattle graze on the estate's rich pastureland. This is a splendid property to accommodate a special family or corporate event. There are 60 rooms with four elegant main reception rooms, a billiard room and 14 luxurious, individually appointed, double ensuite guestrooms that can accommodate up to 28 people. Each guestroom is full of luxury and character. The magnificent library has a live log fireplace. The cuisine is a blend of award winning Irish and International culinary creations utilizing fresh produce. A variety of activities await you with scenic walks or cycling throughout the property. The castle's 20-acre lake is ideal for fishing and boating. COUNTY FERMANAGH

BELLE ISLAND CASTLE - SELF CATERING AND FULLY CATERED is located 8 miles from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Dublin is 105 miles; Belfast is 72 miles distance. This property dates from the 17th century; it can be a Self-Catering or Fully Catered experience. The estate encompasses 470 acres over eight islands. There are several accommodations within the estate from cottages, apartments and a coach house or the castle. This is a working estate with a fully functioning farm with dairy cows. The castle has been refurbished with original grandeur but with modern comforts. The guests enter the castle from the double-vaulted chamber through an inner hall into the drawing room with its open fireplace. The Grand Hall is a huge banqueting room complete with its own minstrel's gallery and can accommodate 28 people. There are eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms and can accommodate up to fourteen people. Each room is tastefully decorated. Facilities include an all-weather tennis court; game shooting, fishing and boat hire can be arranged. The self-catering apartments have their own unique style; some can accommodate the physically challenged guest, some with children and some up to six people. There are two Coach Houses accommodating up to four people each. Each have a fitted kitchen, dining area, living room and log stove burner. All furnishings complement the period style of the building; there is a lovely patio area with picnic table and seats. There are a variety of activities within a short distance of the estate including golf, horse riding, salmon fishing, trout fishing and lake fishing. There are theatres, the Marble Arch Caves, the Ulster American Folk Park and museums. Tours can be organized.

COUNTY GALWAY

ABBEYGLEN CASTLE HOTEL is located on the Sky Road, Clifden - overlooking the village of Clifden with the mountainous background of the 'The Twelve Ben's'. The Hughes Family owns and operates the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel; they are renowned for the quality of their gourmet cuisine and the luxury of accommodations. Afternoon tea awaits you. This is an ideal base for touring the rugged and beautiful Connemara area, and a short drive to Galway City. Activities available include biking, cruising, fishing, golf, hiking, hill walking, and water sports.

BALLYNAHINCH CASTLE HOTEL is located in Recess, Connemara on 350 acres of woodlands overlooking the Ballynahinch Salmon River and surrounded by the magnificence of the Twelve Bens Mountain Range. The Manor Castle dates back to the 18th century and is steeped in history and tradition. With its' old- world charm and casual country elegance, along with all modern comforts, this is a beautiful environment. The bedrooms are individually furnished, many with special features such as a 4-poster bed, walk in closets and excellent views of the mountains or river. The restaurant is excellent with fresh grown produce and locally caught fish. There are many activities and attractions to enjoy with a championship golf course, sea fishing, horse riding plus the gorgeous setting of Connemara.

CASTLE LOUGH - SELF-CATERING is located in Co. Galway, 20 minutes from Galway City. This Castle combines Norman features with modern amenities. The architectural features include stone-cut walls throughout, arched doorways, circular turrets, and a secret stone chamber. It offers a spacious drawing room and a long winding stairway that connect the ground floor and upper levels. Also available for large private functions is the Great Banqueting Hall, which seats up to 120 people. This Self-Catering property can accommodate up to 14 people with 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Activities include hunting, sailing, golf, shooting, tennis, and windsurfing and are available locally. For outdoor functions, up to 300 people can use the Battlements. One-week minimum stay is required.

CLOUGHAN CASTLE - SELF-CATERING is located in Co. Galway. This Castle has stood on these lands for over 800 years. It was originally built as an out-post fortification in the 12th century. This Castle was fully restored and renovated with great attention paid to the historical detail of the Norman period and with all of the modern comforts to convert the property into a luxurious accommodation. The Castle stands on one acre of land with the higher floors having excellent views of the surrounding countryside. A private road leads to a semicircular paved area and a tennis court, which is outside the boundaries of the external fortification, and the Castle is fully spotlighted The Castle is constructed of natural stone; most of the walls stand 6ft in depth. The battlements have space for 300 people for large open-air barbecues or private dining. The internal construction of the castle is exposed natural stone walls, wooded beamed ceiling and stone or wooden floors. A winding 90-step stairway connects the various levels. The Living area consists of the Great Banqueting Hall, capacity for 120 guests, a large drawing room with open fireplace, and a well-equipped kitchen on the ground floor. There is a split-level patio with barbecue. This Self-Catering property can accommodate up to 14 with 7 double bedrooms ensuite; three of the bedrooms have an antique 4-poster bed. Facilities include telephone, electricity, central heating, tennis court, and helicopter landing pad. Absolute privacy is guaranteed. This property is not suitable for children. Housekeeping is included for 2 hours per day. Heat and electricity are metered at an additional charge.

HEADFORD CASTLE - SELF-CATERING is located in Co. Galway, 15 minutes from Galway City. Seven acres of woodland and meadows surround this 14th century castle; through its renovations it has maintained its charm and grandeur. On the Main floor is the Great Hall, which is a spacious living and dining area with its imposing hearth. There is a small fully equipped kitchen with gas cooker. There is a Master queen bedroom with adjoining bathroom. On the Parapet level there is a Gallery bedroom with a queen and single bed; the tower bedroom is a single with washbasin. Both bedrooms have access to parapets. On the Ground floor there is a stone-flagged and vaulted hallway, bathroom with bath and shower, three vaulted bedrooms one leading into another. This is a double and two single beds; the other bedroom has one double and one single bed; a third bedroom is a single. The interior and furnishings are elegant and tasteful throughout the castle. This Self-Catering property can accommodate 10-12 people. There are 9 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms including three vaulted bedrooms, plus a gallery bedroom overlooking the living area. Activities include boating and fishing available on the estate plus there are miles to engage in a beautiful walk. Golf, horse riding, shopping and restaurants are a short drive away. Heating and electricity are in addition to the rental cost; also cooking services can be arranged at additional cost.

KILCOLGAN CASTLE is located on the banks of the Kilcolgan River overlooking Galway Bay, 11 miles from Galway City and 45 minutes from Shannon Airport. SELF-CATERING IS ALSO AVAILABLE. The Castle dates from the 11th century and was rebuilt in the late 18th century incorporating some of the walls of the original castle. There are open fireplaces, a grand piano, a library, sitting rooms and an intimate dining room. Kilcolgan Castle offers elegant wedding and conference facilities. Helicopter service is available upon request. Fine Dining is available within the castle. For Self-Catering the property can accommodate up to eight people. There are two double and two twin bedrooms with interconnecting bathrooms, a large fully equipped kitchen and breakfast room. There is satellite TV, VCR, stereo, telephone, laundry facilities, central heating throughout, and an outdoor patio with barbecue. As a guest you have exclusive fishing rights on the river alongside the castle, famous for salmon and trout. Other activities include game shooting (in season), golf nearby, horse riding and fox hunting and can be arranged. The Aran Islands and the Burren are nearby. Horses are kept on the property and various levels of riding can be arranged. This Self-Catering property has a setting of mountains, forest, lake and parkland with a luxurious main house, a wing with four interconnecting apartments, indoor heated swimming pool, a chapel in the courtyard and a number of Connemara ponies. There are seven properties on this estate for Self-Catering accommodations. Accommodations in the Main House provide a large, elegant drawing room with two grand pianos, a dining room with seats for 12 and a paneled library. On the first floor there are two double and one twin ensuite bedrooms. There is one king-size and one twin bedroom, both ensuite on the second floor. The price of rental includes breakfast, dinner and staff for daily cleaning. The Cottages and Mews Houses Each of the four interconnecting mews houses has its own fully equipped compact kitchen. The Mews has a double and twin bedroom, both ensuite. Mrs. Marshall's is on the upper level above the Courtyard Apartment. It has a twin bedroom ensuite and a double sofa bed in the living room. The Courtyard Apartment has French door out onto the courtyard and has a twin bedded room ensuite and a sofa bed in the living room. The Gallery is on the upper level and has a double-bedded room, a twin bedded room and a sofa bed in the living room, which share a bathroom. In The Mews the upstairs sitting room has a grand piano. Downstairs there is a twin bedroom, a double bedroom, two bathrooms, kitchen and dining room. Catherine's Cottage is at the far end of the yard overlooking the orchard. It has one double and two twin bedded rooms and three bathrooms. Together they have six twin bedrooms, three double bedrooms (two are queen-size) and three sleeper sofas. There are a total of eight bathrooms, each with shower and heated towel rail. One apartment has large kitchen living / dining room; another has large hall with beamed ceiling, natural stone walls and a grand piano. Also available are TV, VCR, telephone (by meter), oil-fired central heating throughout, crib and high chair. Babysitting by arrangement. No pets. Cleaning and cooking staff is available at additional cost for apartments. Heating and electricity are included in rental rate. The St. George House - sleeps 12 in 6 Bedrooms This property has just been restored; it is a 2 story stone house, 200 years old, with lake views to the West at the far end of the Ross Estate from the main house. On the ground floor arched French doors lead through the cut stone entrance into the hall. There are two bedrooms and a 30ft x 12-ft game room with table tennis and TV and video. On the upper floor there are four bedrooms, living / dining room, kitten and laundry. The living room has a medieval fireplace with an open gas fire. The dining area seats 12. The kitchen has all modern facilities and fitted oak cabinets. Four of the bedrooms can be twin or double-bedded. All bedrooms have bathrooms with heated towel rails and hairdryers. Two bedrooms have a fireplace.

COUNTY KILDARE

BARBERSTOWN CASTLE is located in Straffan, Co. Kildare; it is a 30-minute drive from Dublin Airport and city center. The Castle Keep was built in the 13th century. The Elizabethan Wing was built in the second half of the 16th century and is one of the few houses in this area that has been in continuous occupation for over 400 years. The Victorian House was built in the 1830's. The castle is a Country House Hotel with 22 ensuite bedrooms and tastefully decorated and dedicated to the ordinary and extraordinary people who have lived within its walls. The property is opened March through January. The Restaurant serves excellent food and is renowned for its creativity. Activities include golf, horse racing, shooting and hunting.

KILKEA CASTLE is located in Castledermot, Kildare. The Castle has an interesting history, was built in 1180 rebuilt in 1426 and then restored in 1849. This is the oldest inhabited Castle in Ireland, a luxurious setting with 40 ensuite bedrooms. The Castle Hotel was refurbished in the early 1990's maintaining its' unique ancient atmosphere but with all the modern comforts. It offers a restaurant, bars, indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, steamroom and a fully equipped gym and an 18-hole golf course. Activities include golf on the property, tennis, clay pigeon shooting, and fishing. Horse racing courses are nearby.

COUNTY KERRY

The original Castle dates from the 12th century, and then a gothic style was rebuilt in the 19th century incorporating some of the walls of the earlier structure. Some of the reconstruction that took place included reconstructing the bawn walls and a new house along the east wall of the courtyard. A three-story tower serviced by a staircase in a round tower, battlements were added between the towers giving them the appearance of machicolations. On the ground floor ogee windows were added. On the inside gothic fireplaces were added and vaulted ceilings on the ground floor. This Self-Catering property can accommodate up to 10 people.
