Monument to 'An Gorta Mor,' The Great Hunger. Located at the base of Croagh Patrick, Co. Mayo, this metal sculpture is in the form of a coffin ship. Coffin ships transported at least a million citizens of Ireland most who had been evicted from their homes to all parts of the globe. Many traveled to North America and died enroute or immediately after arrival. Thus, the coffin ship was named. Skeletons form the hull and masts of the sculpture giving form and paying tribute to the millions who lost their lives during 'An Gorta Mor.'
