There are three main types of angling in Ireland - Game, Coarse and Sea. Game fishing includes Salmon, Trout and Sea Trout. The main species for coarse fishing are Pike, Bream, Roach, Rudd and Roach Bream Hybrids, Rudd, Perch, Eel and Tench. The sea fishing in Ireland is simply spectacular. There are over 80 varieties of saltwater fish, which can be caught in Irish waters.

Game Fishing:
Ireland has long attracted anglers from around the world for it's excellent Game Fishing. Angling for Trout, Sea Trout and Salmon is conducted in Ireland's serene lakes, rivers and streams. Seasons vary by region and species. However, is generally open from February through September. Light spinning and fly-fishing equipment is best. Trout and Salmon will hit on a variety of natural and artificial bait.
Coarse Fishing:
Coarse Fishing is a relaxing way to enjoy the beauty of the inland waterways of Ireland and the spectacular scenery that surrounds them. Bream are one of the most common coarse species in Ireland. Large Bream can average over 5 lbs. Rudd is another popular coarse fish. It is a striking species with red fins and gold scales. Large Rudd can exceed 4 lbs. Pike thrive in the smallest wild bog, to the largest lakes and rivers. Pike are always in season and can be found throughout the entire country. Some pike taken from Irish waterways have exceeded 50 lbs. In addition to Pike, Roach and Perch can be fished every month. Trench, Bream and Rudd are most active in the warmer months. Their season usually runs April through November. Light spinning and fly-fishing equipment is best for smaller species. Natural bait and flies are best. Serious Pike fishing requires larger spinning equipment and steel leads. Pike will strike at a variety of natural bait, artificial lures and spinners.
Sea Fishing:
No matter where you are in Ireland you are never more than 50 miles from the sea. Sea fishing can be conducted from the shore, piers or by boat. Charter boats with experienced local captains conduct a variety of private excursions. In addition, there are large commercial vessels, which take groups on regularly scheduled fishing voyages. Fishing seasons vary by species. Popular species of saltwater fish include: Mackerel, Mullet, Whiting, Plaice, Turbot, Pollack, Shark, Cod, Eel, Flounder, Wrasse, and Bass.
